Tisca Tiara “Apfel Baum” Hand-Tufted Wool Rug by Frédéric, France, 1980s
A rare and highly expressive “Apfel Baum” rug by Tisca Tiara, designed by Frédéric and produced in France during the 1980s.
At the centre of the composition stands a stylised apple tree, rendered in vivid blocks of colour and surrounded by a richly textured, graphic landscape. The design has the immediacy of a drawing and the presence of a large-scale textile artwork: playful at first glance, yet carefully balanced in its proportions, colour and rhythm.
Each section of the pattern has been formed by hand using the tufting technique, allowing the outlines, tonal changes and individual motifs to retain a distinctly artisanal character. Made from 100% natural wool, the rug has a soft, substantial surface and the durability associated with Tisca Tiara’s hand-crafted production.
Tisca became known during the second half of the twentieth century for transforming the traditional wool rug into an expressive element of modern interior design. Rather than functioning merely as a background, designs such as Apfel Baum were conceived as central elements within a room—part furnishing, part graphic art.
The rug works particularly well in a living room, bedroom, library or creative interior, but its strong composition also allows it to be displayed as a textile artwork.
