Japanese Studio Pottery Vase with Bamboo Decoration and Inscribed Wooden Box
A slender Japanese ceramic vase with a cream-white, richly textured glaze and dark brown painted bamboo decoration. Expressive brushwork gives the stems and leaves a lively rhythm, while the subtly irregular body and gently uneven rim emphasise the piece’s handcrafted character.
The accompanying Japanese workshop leaflet connects the vase with 亀幸苑, a pottery workshop in Ube, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The document identifies the pottery as 亀幸焼 and bears the name 広高・幸子. The wooden box carries the inscription 花生, denoting a flower vase, together with a calligraphic signature and a red seal. A square impressed mark appears on the base of the vase.
The workshop leaflet also includes an artistic résumé recording acceptance into the Nitten exhibition in 1984. This refers to the artistic career described in the document; there is no evidence that this particular vase was exhibited. Its individual maker and precise date of manufacture remain to be confirmed.
With its restrained palette, tactile surface and bold bamboo motif, the vase has a strong presence as a standalone decorative object. It pairs particularly well with natural wood, stone and furnishings of simple, clean-lined design.
