Vintage Sculptural Rattan Bar Stool, Japan, 1970s

Its character comes from the tall, airy structure and the naturally flowing lines of the rattan. Four slender legs flare gently towards the floor before curving back into decorative loops. Between them, fine crossed rattan elements and circular stretchers create a light, rhythmic framework.

The round seat is formed from tightly coiled rattan arranged in a continuous spiral. Viewed from above, the concentric pattern has an almost graphic quality, while the subtle irregularities and warm honey tones retain the immediacy of traditional handcraft.

Both functional and sculptural, the stool would sit naturally beside a kitchen island, breakfast counter or home bar. It could also be used as an occasional stand, a plant pedestal or a decorative object in its own right. Its light silhouette works particularly well in warm, relaxed interiors built around natural materials.

Made in Japan, most likely during the 1970s. No manufacturer’s label or identifying mark is present, and the maker remains unknown.

Presented in authentic vintage condition. The rattan shows surface wear, tonal variation, natural irregularities and occasional fine splits consistent with age, use and handmade construction. These are visible characteristics of the stool’s original patina rather than concealed imperfections. Minor variations in shape and colour occur between the individual examples.
